When your solar panels or battery system produce more electricity than your home needs, you can export that excess energy back to the grid. To make sure you’re paid correctly for what you export, you need the right export tariff in place — and that’s where we help.
At Green Guardians, we guide homeowners through the full setup process for battery discharge export tariffs and SEG (Smart Export Guarantee) tariffs, ensuring your system is registered properly and that your energy is measured accurately.

The Octopus Flux tariff is designed specifically for homes with solar panels and battery storage. It rewards smart energy usage by paying higher export rates during key times when the grid needs more power. At the same time, it offers cheaper off-peak charging periods so your battery can be topped up at low cost.
This tariff is ideal for homeowners who want to maximize returns from both solar generation and strategic battery discharge.

Ensuring your system is configured correctly for export readings
Helping you with registration and verification with Octopus
Checking that your inverter, battery, and smart meter are sending accurate export data
Guiding you through any documentation or setup steps you may need

With the SEG tariff, you earn a flat rate of 4.1p/kWh for every unit of power you export.
To qualify:
1. Your renewable electricity generating system must be located in Great Britain with a total installed capacity (TIC) of no more than 5MW, or no more than 50kW for micro-CHP. Refer to the full SEG eligibility requirements for more details.
2. You must have a meter capable of providing half-hourly export readings, typically a smart meter. Contact us if you need assistance in getting a smart meter installed.
3. Your installation and installer must be certified through the microgeneration certification scheme (MCS) or an equivalent certification.
4. You cannot receive a SEG tariff if you are already receiving export payments under the Feed-in Tariff scheme.
Eligibility for the SEG tariff depends on several factors, including the amount of electricity you export to the grid, your specific tariff rates, and whether your tariff has variable pricing or a flat rate. Contact Green Guardians to determine your eligibility and get started.
No, with the SEG tariff, you don't have to switch your import tariff. This allows you to keep a favorable fixed or EV rate with another company. However, you might miss out on better fixed export rates offered to Green Guardians customers, such as the 15p/kWh rate on our Outgoing tariff. If you wish to sign up for Green Guardians SEG without switching your import tariff, you can sign up here.
To join the SEG, you need the following:
1. Your renewable technology must be certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) or FlexiOrb scheme.
2. A letter or email from the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) approving the new MPAN.
3. A working electricity smart meter.
You don't have to do anything. If you're signed up to receive FiT payments, your contract will remain in place for its entire duration.
